What is the best writing setup ? (part 1)

Posted by HED in

When you don't have time to write, you make time to write. This means you will try to write in weird places and situations. Since I am one of these people, let me share with you some writing setups I tested.

Writing in the train, longhand
The worst writing setup ever for me ! Being in the train means a ton of people around you : there's absolutely no room to write, even when you are seated. I write in a microscopic notebook, and bringing A4 printouts of my scenes to edit is a big no-no (unless I ask permission to use other people's laps as tables). And of course, you have to change trains inbetween, breaking your concentration mid-sentence. And did I mention the noise ?

Pros : writing longhand is relaxing
Cons : almost everything - the worst being when you come back home and you're unable to read what you've written in your train notebook !

Writing in the toilet, with a laptop
Hey, no kidding, even Chris Baty advised it in No Plot, No Problem. It's the perfect place to isolate yourself and write. And you don't look antisocial when you go there. Most of the time, the quietness makes you feel more inspired, thus productive (provided you don't have a wi-fi connection which makes you waste time). Just make sure you don't stay too long because it will look suspicious.

Pros : absolute quietness and concentration.
Cons : time limit

Lol.... I never thought about that... I don't think i will use it though. :D

Hehehe, I have a Sony Vaio... just tuck it under the arm and no one notices you snuck your laptop into the bathroom. It even fits between two magazines and everyone reads in there.

No, I have not really snuck it in there, but sounds like a way to get in some writing time.

As for why I ended up here - I found you via a random search for writer's blogs at Technorati. What happened is, I was tagged by a fellow for a tagging game, and have tagged you since I found your blog to be very interesting and to look like you might enjoy getting tagged for this.

If you want to play (nothing says you have to) the rules are posted in an entry at my blog The Daily Writing Prompt. I have made a small change, instead of 7 weird things about me, I listed 7 websites of interest to writers, feel free to revert it back to the original weird things or even to the first change someone made of 7 famous people you know.

Have a good day and happy writing! (in or out of the bathroom)

Sandra
