Alphasmart : the ultimate writing machine ?

Posted by HED in

When I first read about Alphasmarts it was in Chris Baty's No Plot, No Problem. There was just a sentence, and I didn't pay too much attention.

But the more I progress in my writing, the more I realize that these "toys" could be the answer to my problems : they are portable, have a great battery life...
I spend almost 4 hours per day commuting by train to work. I write my stories longhand... and spend my evenings typing them back on PC. That's a tedious task. Would I write faster if I had an Alphasmart ? The answer is yes, definately.

I have still some concerns about bringing such a machine in a train (would it attract stealers ? or would they regard it as a mere toy ?). And I need a AZERTY keyboard with accents, too. (remember that I'm French)

If you use an Alphasmart to write in public transport, don't hesitate to share your views in the comments !

I'm curious about the alphasmart too. I'm looking for a cheap, portable writing tool, and I've considered it. My concern is the small screen and the inability to install software I use (OpenOffice).

I'm considering the Asus eee (when it finally comes out). It's a cheap, small laptop, but I've heard that they seem to be put together pretty cheaply.

I'm subscribing to your feed and looking forward to reading any comments on the alphasmart. It's definitely still on my list of possible-buys.

I didn't know about Asus eee. It looks very nice ! But the battery life seems insignificant compared to an Alphasmart : only 3 hours.

If you require to run Open office, this rules out many options. PDAs with expandable keyboards are maybe the way to go, but they are expensive.

I will certainly buy an alphasmart for NaNoWriMo, in November, so I'll keep you up to date on this blog.

Hi.... I have an alphasmart 3000 and love it. And I'm also looking for AZERTY keyboard with accents. I found a place to install french software on the machine, but have not tried it. Perhaps this will change the keyboard to azerty?
